For Los Angeles-based designer David Wiseman, design is a way of “investigating ways of bringing nature indoors.” In his early sketchbooks, Wiseman made many drawings of biological structures. He was struck by nature’s recurring patterns, many of which were based on the six-sided form of the hexagon, such as honeycomb, tortoise shells, snowflakes, and crystals. Wiseman liked the way that surface pattern and structure become one in these forms, designing objects where there is no real distinction between the pattern and the structure. His faceted vases are an example of this.
