Venice, Italy / Brooklyn, USA
More than a century old, Fortuny remains the highly esteemed Venetian textile company founded by noted artist, inventor and fashion-turned textile designer, Mariano Fortuny. The stewardship of Fortuny has been entrusted to the Riad family, who for the past 20 years have embraced Fortuny's inventive spirit while remaining steadfastly committed to the illustrious history and traditions of the company. Today, every Fortuny fabric is still produced in the same factory, on the same machines, using the same secret process and techniques handed down from generation to generation.
Brooklyn-based artist Ann Wood created these animals using vintage Fortuny fabrics. Ann works with antique garments and textiles. There is a tenderness and affection in the re-purposing of things that were once personal and perhaps treasured possessions. Much of her inspiration comes from these materials as well as from many of the ideas she has been infatuated with her whole life: smallness, intricacies, miniaturization, collections, repetition; lost or abandoned things discovered and rescued; the idea of haunted and enchanted places, the setting of a tiny stage. Unique and one-of-a-kind.
