Genmai Cha is a classic Japanese green tea, blended with toasted, popped and roasted brown rice. It is sometimes referred to as the People’s Tea, originally created to stretch short supplies of tea, with the less costly rice serving as a
filler. It was also popular with Buddhist monks, who mixed green tea with the browned rice stuck to the bottom of their rice cauldrons in a gesture of humility and conservation. Perfect at breakfast time or as a daily drinking green tea when something hearty is needed.
The brewed tea has a light yellow hue. Its flavor is mild and combines the fresh grassy flavor of green tea with the aroma of the roasted rice, while the sugar and starch from the rice cause the tea to have a warm, full flavor that is similar to that of nuts.
Although it is a green tea, for the best taste we recommend using boiled water with a brewing time of 30 seconds.
